Power Systems sales ended 2011 with a bang—IBM said revenues from its boxes that run IBM i and Unix grew 6 percent while revenues from the rest of its hardware (mainframes, x86 servers, and storage) decreased. Once upon a time we kept hard copies of every single article submission and its edited version in color-coded file folders. We stored those folders in file cabinets five drawers tall. You can imagine how many file cabinets we had accumulated in 25-plus years of publishing. Well, the way we keep documents has certainly changedbut only recently did we lighten our paper load in the process of moving to cozier digs. Seeing as how we had enough paper to fill several small storage closets, I can't

A new aspect of the upcoming RPG & DB2 Summit got me thinking about one of the highlights of my journalism career. During a journalism conference sponsored by The Seattle Times, I had the chance to meet with a Times reporter who gave me feedback on the articles I had entered in a writing competition. I hung on her every word and it was exhilarating for a cub reporter like me, to say the least. *Read more…

IBM has been on a cloud roll of sorts, introducing service after service in a cloud computing frenzy. And with IBM itself admitting that it's shifting to become a high-margin services company, I doubt the cloud computing era is going to end (until, of course, the next "it" phrase comes along). Even Joe Developer has given IBM the thumbs up signal in the cloud computing space. A survey conducted by Evans Data Corp on developers' perceptions of the major players in the cloud computing space

The Post-Bulletin in Rochester, Minn., reported Wednesday that at least 68 IBM employees were laid off earlier this year from the Rochester facility where IBM i technologies originate. The newspaper quoted an official with Rochester's Workforce Development office, who said that 68 people attended a meeting at IBM that was held by the office's Rapid Response team. Those 68 workers were helped in May by monies from the state of Minnesota that were earmarked for education and training. *Read

I can't seem to understand what is so good about the Cloud. Or specifically, what's so good about it for IBM i?
